Freckles is a 12-year-old Appaloosa pony that is blind. You may have seen him on Facebook as his owners were trying to find a home for him before moving out of the area. None of the other valley rescues responded, so the day before his owners moved Wings decided to take him even though we didn’t really have room for him. We were worried he would just be abandoned on the property by his owners.
Freckles was quite upset by the move, most likely because being blind he has to rely on his scenting and hearing to make sense of his environment. We put him in with Cisco and Poco, and after a few initial skirmishes they are settling in well together. One of our board members has offered to foster him to see if he gets along with her Mammoth donkey. Before we move him, he needs a vet check, dental float and hoof trim. His hooves have not been trimmed in 2 years.
He’s a sweet horse but somewhat skittish with new people at first. Other than his eyesight he seems healthy and will get a thorough checkup from the vet this week. He moves around well and is able to find his food and water. Freckles would love a partial sponsor for his feed and care.
Annie is a 23 year-old riding mule whose senior owner died in January. Annie has an eye infection and the widow is not able to handle her as she is a small senior woman and Annie is a big mule. Annie needs her eye cleaned antibiotic ointment administered 2x a day. She was concerned about Annie's health and that she may go blind if not treated and made the hard decision to ask Wings to take her husband's lifelong friend. Since she lives here in the valley, she hopes to be able to visit Annie often. Aside from relinquishing the mule, the owner is also donating all sorts of ranch supplies as Annie is the last equine on the property and we will find these supplies very useful. Once Annie is recovered from her eye condition and assessed for riding, we hope to be able to adopt her out.
